What is Rotto Rickshaws?
Rotto Rickshaws offer guided electric rickshaw tours around Rottnest Island. A relaxed and eco-friendly way to explore the island’s beaches, bays, and landmarks. No pedalling required, just open air and ocean views.
How often do tours run?
We operate two tours daily, seven days a week during the warmer months (October to April). Advance bookings are recommended.
How many rickshaws are on each tour?
Depending on bookings, up to six rickshaws may travel together on a single tour. This allows couples, families, or small groups to share the experience while keeping things relaxed and personal.
If you’d like a more intimate experience, you can book a private rickshaw, which allows you to reserve a Rickshaw for that tour – without the need to share with other guests.
Where do tours start and finish?
All tours depart from Thomson Bay, beside Dome Cafe, and return to the same point, unless you’ve previously arranged a private drop-off location.
Do I need to pedal?
No. None at all. Sit back, take in the view, and let your personal guide do the pedalling.
How many people can ride in a rickshaw?
Each rickshaw has front and rear-facing seats and can seat up to four passengers.
For comfort and safety, we limit each ride to:
• 2 adults and 2 children over 3 years of age, or
• 3 adults (combined total weight not exceeding 300 kg)
This ensures a smooth and stable ride across Rottnest’s hilly terrain.
Why is there a weight limit?
Although the rickshaws are electric-assisted, safe operation on Rottnest’s steeper sections requires a controlled total weight. It keeps you, your guide, and the vehicle steady and safe throughout the tour.

How long is a tour?
Each tour lasts approximately 90 minutes, including a few scenic stops along the way.
What will I see?
You’ll explore turquoise bays, quiet coastal roads, heritage landmarks, and of course, plenty of quokkas. Regular stops include Parker Point and Oliver Hill Guns (both with public toilets).
Wildlife sightings are common – but not guaranteed. Keep an eye out for seals, dolphins, sea eagles, ospreys, and other local creatures.
Are tours suitable for all ages?
Yes. Rickshaws are stable and comfortable for guests of most ages. However, children under three are not permitted due to safety precautions, as the rickshaws do not accommodate child seat restraints. Children under 15 must always be accompanied by an adult.
Accessibility
We’re committed to making our tours as accessible as possible. If you have a disability or specific mobility needs, please email us before your booking. We’ll do everything we can to accommodate your requirements safely and comfortably.
Can I bring drinks and snacks?
Absolutely – in fact, we encourage it. Please note that alcohol isn’t permitted during tours for safety and island regulations.
Is food or drink available for purchase?
We recommend bringing your own refreshments.
There is a seasonal café beside Wadjemup Lighthouse on the Lighthouse Tour called Kallis which sells drinks, snacks and coffees. Please check their opening hours on their website.
What should I bring?
We recommend bringing sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, water, and your camera or phone. The island light is bright, and the views are spectacular.
What happens if it rains?
Tours go ahead in light rain – each rickshaw has a clear rain cover. If weather conditions become unsafe (high winds, lightning, or heavy rain), tours will be rescheduled.
Are audio tours available?
Audio tours are included in your experience in English. We’re hoping to have these translated into multiple languages soon – stay tuned.
Can I book a private or group tour?
Yes. Private charters for weddings, events, or group outings are available. Multiple rickshaws can also travel together for larger groups.
How do I book?
You can book online at rottorickshaws.com.au, through the Rottnest Island Visitor Centre, or via participating travel and ferry partners.
How do I get to Rottnest Island?
Regular ferries depart from Fremantle, Perth City, and Hillarys. Tickets can be booked directly through ferry operators. It’s best to plan your arrival at least 30 minutes before your tour time.
Can I bring luggage, backpacks or shopping bags?
Small bags and backpacks are fine, but we can’t carry large luggage items. Please leave big bags or eskies in your accommodation or at the visitor lockers near the jetty.
Do you take walk-ins?
If there’s space available, yes. However, our tours often sell out, so an advance booking is the best way to secure your spot.
Do you offer gift vouchers?
Yes. Gift vouchers are available and make a great present for birthdays, holidays, or special occasions. Please email us with your special request and we’ll do the rest!
